Dihydromyricetin Questions

Dihydromyricetin is a compound found in hovenia dulcis, which is more commonly known as the Oriental Raisen Tree. It has been used in traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries as a hangover cure and as a method of preventing alcohol intoxication, but has just recently gained recognition outside of Asia.

Recent research has shown that DHM acts as a "sober pill", if you are drunk and take DHM it will cause you to sober up at a quicker rate and will prevent a hangover the next morning. [1][2][3][4] If you take DHM before drinking alcohol, it will make it much more difficult to become intoxicated. [1][2][3][4] It has also been found to be very good for the liver, and can help mitigate some of the liver damage caused by alcohol. [1][2][3][5][6][7][8][9]

It's sobriety inducing effects are not instantaneous, however, it simply decreases the time necessary to sober-up. Taking DHM at last call wil not sober you up in time to drive home! What it will do is cause you to become fully sober faster than you otherwise would, and will prevent a hangover the next morning.

Research has shown Dihydromyricetin to provide the following benefits:

  • Prevents Hangovers [1][2]
  • Prevents drunkenness, reduces existing intoxication. [1][2][3][4]
  • Reduces symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. [1][2]
  • Prevents and helps repair liver damage. [1][2][3][5][6][7][8][9]
  • Can help reduce brain damage due to oxidative stress. [3]

In one study Dihydromyricetin reduced the voluntary alcohol consumption of rats [1], which has led to researchers identifying it as a possible treatment for Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD). More research is needed to conclusively say that DHM is an effective treatment for alcoholism, though it has been shown to reduce symptoms of withdrawal. [1][2]

There are also many studies which show that DHM may inhibit the growth and slow the spread of certain types of tumors. [10][11][12][13][14][15] It is important not to read too deeply into these findings, as most of these studies were performed in vitro, and don't necessary mean that supplementing with DHM will have any anti-cancer effect in humans.

Dihydromyricetin's anti-intoxication, hangover prevention, and liver protecting properties are a result of the following effects it has on the body:

  • Antagonises GABA(A) receptors in the brain, reversing the potentiation of them caused by alcohol. [1][16]
  • Improves the activity of the enzymes Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). [2] This allows the liver to process alcohol and the toxic compound acetaldehyde at a faster rate than normal. Acetaldehyde is a byproduct created when the liver breaks down alcohol and is one of the main causes of hangovers.
  • Reduces the amount of alcohol absorbed into the GI-tract. [2]
  • Removes Fe and Fe2+ ions from the body. [16] These are heavy metals which are harmful to the body if present in high amounts.
  • Improves GABA(A) receptor plasticity in situations of alcohol tolerance and withdrawal. [1]

Hangovers have many different causes, and Dihydromyricetin addresses almost all of them. The three main causes of hangovers are:

  • The buildup of a toxic compound known as acetaldehyde, which is a byproduct formed when the liver breaks down alcohol.
  • Short-term alcohol withdrawal.
  • Dehydration.
  • Sleep Deprevation.

Acetaldehyde Accumulation: Dihydromyricetin helps the liver break down acetaldehyde at a faster rate by promoting the activity of the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase. [2] Acetaldehyde is over 20 times more toxic than alcohol, and the more of it present in your body the worse your hangover will be. DHM's ability to get it out of your system quickly is one of the biggest reasons it prevents hangovers.

Alcohol Withdrawal: Hangovers are partially caused by short-term alcohol withdrawal. The symptoms of this type of withdrawal are far milder than for alcoholics trying to quit, but still contribute to hangovers. DHM has been proven to reduce the negative symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. [1][2]

Dehydration: Dihydromyricetin does nothing to combat dehydration, so you should still drink water before you go to bed!

Lack of Sleep: Sleep deprevation exacerbates most hangover symptoms, and is responsible for fatigue and brain fog the next day. Alcohol's harmful effect on sleep is mostly caused by short-term alcohol withdrawal, which DHM reduces many of the negative symptoms of.

Dihydromyricetin is a completely safe supplement. The plant hovenia dulcis from which it is extracted has been used safely for centuries for its anti-hangover and intoxication reducing effects. DHM, an extract of the active ingredients in hovenia dulcis, has a similar safety profile. A recent study on the potential of DHM as a treatment for alcoholism found it to have no major side effects. [1]

One study on rats found that 200mg/kg of dihydromyricetin had no negative side effects. This is equavalent to about 49 mg/kg for humans, or a single dose of 3,422 mg for someone who weighs 150 pounds.[17] This safe dose is over 11 times what we recommend be taken at once.

Our product is manufactured in the United States, tested for purity, and guaranteed to be free of contaminents.

NOTE: Dihydromyricetin only becomes unsafe when it is used as an excuse to use alcohol in an irresponsible manner. Don't use DHM as an excuse to consume more alcohol than you normally would, and never drink and drive!

A recent study on the potential of Dihydromyricetin as an alcoholism treatment found it to have no major side effects. [1] It is an extremely safe supplement, and is well-tolerated by the body.

Every bottle of Dihydromyricetin we sell is extracted and produced in the United States, and meets all FDA standards. When you purchase our product, you can rest assured that the DHM you recieve will be free of:

  • Heavy metals (As, Cd, Pb, Cl)
  • Pesticide residue
  • Solvent residue
  • Yeast and Mold
  • Bacterial contaminents including: E. Coli, Salmnella, and Staphylococcus

We are happy to provide the Certificate of Analysis for our current batch. Please contact us if you'd like a copy.

We recommend taking one 300 mg capsule after you've finished drinking, before bed, to prevent a hangover the next morning. If you've had over 7 drinks you may want to take an additional capsule. To prevent alcohol intoxication, we recommend taking one 300 mg capsule right when you begin drinking.

To prevent a hangover the next morning, we recommend that you take a DHM capsule when you've finished drinking, before going to bed.

While some people have reported that DHM helps alleviate hangovers when taken in the morning, we've found it to be far more effective at preventing them.

One study on Dihydromyricetin found that it causes the liver to metabolize alcohol at a faster rate, and causes your BAC to fall at a faster rate then it otherwise would. [2] That said, there is little information on how much faster your BAC will decrease, but it will not be instantly.

DHM in no way causes instant sobriety, so do not think that you'll be safe to drive just because you took one a little earlier in the night. Never drink and drive!

Our DHM is manufactured in the United States and rigorously tested to ensure purity and quality.

Unlike many other companies that sell hangover relief products, we aren't hawking snake oil. The scientific research proves that Dihydromyricetin works, and we go out of our way to acquire and sell only the highest quality product. We've sold DHM to hundreds of happy customers, and we're confident that once you try DHM you'll be blown away!

How confident? If you're not satisfied with the results you get we will give you a full refund!
